Distributions involve just the finalised PDF, whereas sharing gives someone a temporary login to view the report and the images.
Distributions have various mechanisms and integrations to send the PDF out. You can send them out via HL7 HealthLink and Medical-Objects, via Fax, or via Email.
Sharing can only be done via email, and gives that person a Piccolo login that they can use to browse the report.
